The design concept originates from the Han dynasty stone relief titled “Aristocratic Rank and Status Hunting.” In the olden days, phrases like “shooting at the mark of feudal prince” and “shooting at the mark of government position” were common parlances. In terms of diction, similar-sounding and phonetic loan characters were preferred by the Han people to express auspiciousness. In this illustration, “雀què” (sparrow) and “爵jué” (peerage) are similar-sounding, and “猴hóu” (monkey) and “侯hóu” (marquis) are phonetic loans. The man standing underneath a tree and drawing his bow at the monkey and sparrows is a symbol of the Han people’s ambition to obtain nobility.
